DCC was a fun place to be for the Civil War Encampment day. The
students and I learned a lot from the reanactors. The blacksmith taught us
all about his job and how much fun it is. Mrs. Aaron made homemade donuts
and we each got to try one. I also learned how to play civil war era parlor
games! These consisted of a cake walk and the ministers cat. We had some
trouble thinking of adjectives, but we managed. One of my new friends, Emily, won
a cake in the cake walk and she let me try a piece. It was really good! At the
end of the day all of the middle school students sat around and discussed the day. The girls that I
spent most of my day with explained to the students who I was and I got to share my knowledge of the civil war with the students. Overall, I had a wonderful day. I will definitely
miss DuBois Central Catholic Middle School:

I arrived at DCC on Wednesday, May 9, 2012. I found the Civil War Club students very busy getting ready for their Civil War Day on Friday, May 11, 2012. While helping out I learned that the students have 10 Civil War Re-Enactors and living historians coming to teach about the civil war. It was really cool to know that they are going to learn period parlor games, civil war medicine, photography of the civil war, the job of the sanitary commision, the roles of women during the civil war, and they even have a blacksmith working with metal. I'm really excited to experience the day with the other students. I'm posting a picture with some of the students and the middle school principal. Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-48088764037015436392012-04-04T14:01:00.004-07:002012-04-04T14:14:39.116-07:00<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 113px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2-uuDkTKG06LOWCVUOKLGe3Jq_kTcRcoHhSHbDFYFkX23WpGGE7FqTjCmt3v7JfQoj982TK8FdvwRy2_z397igiAq1yCcVpbrs55oVKxUazqt_TKLiFJrXsfqpbO_AFtNUnuhhiCLCOXd/s200/2012-04-04_11-18-02_115.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727656596550324114" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 113px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpHjC_uG1NpoS-rgSi1WQkoU_GTyxv5dUctDK8AK22M2DYV2rCsgEKmtiZm7fCIaKN6jqx8qtm6ohJsfloLPPZkonacoW9GhCzKF4C-b2te4eTxgb6ciPKuPjKsgJGkl9N3-SQbja31vMT/s200/2012-04-04_11-11-25_498.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727656504646234114" />
Wow! What a great day at Youngblood Intermediate. Today, I spent some time in Ms. Fallos's class. The class is concluding their study of the Civil War in just a few days. Today the class was divided into five groups. Each group created a short lesson to teach me something that they learned during their study of the Civil War. One group read me a book called Honest Abe. This book taught me all about the trials and tribulations that Abraham Lincoln went through before he became one of our great presidents. Another group read me the book Pink and Say. This was such a touching story of two young boys who were soldiers in the Civil War. I was also introduced to the book Moses. This is the story of Harriet Tubman, another influential person during the time of the Civil War. I had a great time learning from all of these books. Two of the other groups taught me a new song about hardtack biscuits...these were little crackers made out of flour and water (and sometimes beetles) that the soldiers had to eat during the Civil War. I learned so much today. It's amazing what you can learn from books and songs!Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-42718052847736041352012-04-02T13:59:00.004-07:002012-04-02T14:15:26.419-07:00Fort Sumter Today<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQzngU_1yXkb539bwSixsAPynOhU96Ejv6RHdjgec2v9opc4XQRJeW29MGVZZOz-3mQgtEThO1RloNaekaNav8A9uqyyRghMxUV-OTBCm7AGD1VIa9pOKW8gHEhQP2VjJCWY_eAb7SL0fX/s200/Picture+035.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726915016439859554" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcjDT70xhOe37umbGqXoAlpR2ipAEfk0yxe7zBzAElDYc4sERNUpxqdc5lF7lk3b_rKy5OSwqt6noHWHJ0u9FNPBLqsBX2q-PP_ounDN6c7Ic1jqWdSGL9KSQ5tkae_l633JT_JEcwHS8i/s200/Picture+032.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726915007429197986" />
I have really enjoyed my time with Ms. Lewis' classes. I have learned a lot of new information about the Civil War that I did not know. Today, I learned about the attack on Fort Sumter and how that was the start of the Civil War. Then I saw current pictures of Fort Sumter. It is now a national park that people visit in Charleston, S.C. I listened to a read aloud of Soldier's Heart. It seems like it is going to be a good book. So far, the main character Charley Goodard has enlisted into the army in Minnesota but he is not yet a man, he is only 15. When he arrived at Fort Snelling, he was given a pair of black pants, that were too short for him, a shirt, and a floppy black hat. He has learned to load and fire his weapon. Charley also has to do "drills" to help prepare his group for war. I leave Ms. Lewis' class tomorrow so I will not know how the story ends. I hope my new friends will keep me posted on how it all ends.Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-19706513572196590392012-04-02T07:21:00.007-07:002012-04-02T08:22:11.379-07:00Causes of the Civil War<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1WaQF8GA0SkBmhi08u2B5NIHtWfBgvdOTgdKZ8giIE94DYnSaJtgbpH0ob4NNXnK01vBP2cn_lFtPph-jtxFyOmznk8Q862nggkyJrayrXwBlszdpp767VW7EA9RQp3kxFRh0QMrgLk9S/s200/Quiz+Clicker.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726823342539352610" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwz3E63fqrJPap_yqCGHKwOkJLjeRW6a0_fv-J06V7wJSJpJjrQOATSye9w1cOewMjPCihWHhzJbj_V9n47iRWauENGqOsy0HrhQuiDlV5YgsMW7_D6PTgEBvEuA3hpWj6B9uxfK1SMDrw/s200/B2+Group+6.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726823185448320498" />
Sorry that this post is late. I learned so much on Friday that I needed the weekend to gather my thoughts. On Friday, after my arrival to Ms. Lewis' class, the students presented their Road Maps to the Civil War. This was an amazing project! From the presentations, I learned about 10 events that led to the Civil War. It seems that a lot was being done in the country to keep everything balanced and fair regarding free and slave states. There were a lot of compromises that were created to help with this but they did not help. Also, the issue of slavery period was a big deal as well. So much so, a woman by the name of Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote a book titled Uncle Tom's Cabin to tell about the cruelty of slavery. I also learned about the election of Abraham Lincoln and listened to a story about him too. I had no idea that President Lincoln had a patent! After the story, we watched a Brain Pop video about the causes of the Civil War. Tim and Moby really helped me to understand the video and they are funny too! After that, we took a quiz using an Active Classroom Response system. I thought it was pretty cool to be able to respond using the clicker instead of having to use paper and pencil. Well, today is my last day with Ms. Lewis' classes, I will blog again before I go.Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-48089971377168564392012-03-29T08:29:00.004-07:002012-03-29T08:40:28.355-07:00Go AFA!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7RxBq3lMyuXhzowa1GTSRA6W26bvkTcDbSyA2ubQJGyzVtsxiZzhZOkJFoRzbxPrJzTzLb5uYs2otAr-BEOlG5gYqbiAhRo5h4KtCZmJayL17IymgdvIO6L0j4oUK7oKNZ4QrnrT39uGi/s200/photo5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5725344063139357426" />
Hey guys! Today I just discussed the life of a boy name Jethro from a Civil War novel called Across Five Aprils. That boy is really trustworthy. He had to take over his dad's farm at such a young age(11). This shows how the Civil War affected many different people in different ways. So far this book has been good. I'm on chapter 11. Shh! Don't tell anybody I read ahead. I recommend this book for anyone who loves to read and learn about the Civil War.Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-91281930819898680302012-03-26T12:09:00.010-07:002012-03-28T12:47:16.991-07:00Reading a new novel<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK3fcxnme5Ctljf4KtArWCM6jxgS44ziW0X183qMqNhSOARnsyXUrtWiS24cM-xsCFhR6ABI7BtlD4U6WIRj-DY5LXbTeCH5ooE-PN9ODxKV0Vkad8X4kyHCP-3J-4CS-00povxrqfOR5X/s200/photo3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5724289792969870658" />
Hanging out with my bud's Khang, Raveena, and Tracy. We are discussing a novel called The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg which is kind of similar to the real Civil War. I enjoyed spending time with the students of Youngblood Intermediate because they are very enthusiastic about learning. We've created a circle map about one of the characters from the novel, and it was really fun. I hope to learn more facts about the Civil War from this school!Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-37858727608606074012011-07-19T05:12:00.001-07:002011-07-19T07:08:23.547-07:00More about Green Mount<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2qYS_LVV0SKSLD_jCsDpMShoCYdfP3Ye10GPYk2ReO1yFPR7hH5Lhe4NTJCZmh4YylS89MfW8nmd_zTWkaCW9OR83ADyHD2FtYdyoKTKTqcEmFZpNw93VwdTpqKxMXBc7KjWZsK_V2v_g/s320/100_2354.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631043103303148738" />
Well, after some delicious honey I'm ready to tell you more about my visit to Green Mount Cemetery.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 242px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNiX7y2rKwL2w3YlXazFjCxeFzcMBASJiXj56zxNjPSSDVa9r9cTICZ-IxHeHbmAKv-BDEO298kzF-us_Z7pfeBhKoy52LzVtust_oDX90tO1hcppRqM7BAG-R597AYTPtmJ6IYQ6DzNVZ/s320/100_2356.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631043372995777506" />
The grave that is visited most often is that of John Wilkes Booth. I'm sure that you have heard of General Joseph E. Johnston. Johnston was a Confederate soldier. When his friend, Union General William T. Sherman died, Johnston served as a pallbearer at his funeral; during the procession in New York City in 1891, he kept his hat off as a sign of respect in the cold, rainy weather. Someone had some concern for the old general's health and asked him to put on his hat, to which Johnston replied "If I were in his place and he standing here in mine, he would not put on his hat." This is where the first shot of the Civil War was fired on April 12, 1861. Construction of the fort was started in 1827. This week I got to visit Charleston, SC. While there I visited the Aiken Rhett House. This is the former home of the Governor of South Carolina. The house was where Jefferson Davis stayed on his only visit to Charleston during the Civil War. After Jefferson Davis' visit General PGT Beauregard moved his headquarters to the house during the Civil War to keep it safe from the heavy Federal bombardment.Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-76006271344566635392011-05-23T11:17:00.000-07:002011-05-23T11:21:48.766-07:00Rufus S. Reed 2Hi I am Civil War Sallie and I will tell you about the Rufus S. Reed 2 at the Canal Museum. The Rufus S. Reed 2 is a freighter and it went up and down the Erie Canal with supplies to keep the builders to keep building. The frieghter held whiskey, coal, sugar, salt, and much more. I also learned that the people had to sleep outside on top of the freighter. The water that they sailed on was so dirty that you could not even touch it.

From Brenden

From CivilWarSallie

Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-81999449838015689572011-05-23T10:35:00.000-07:002011-05-23T11:17:01.220-07:00Sleep in a Boat!Hi I am Civil War Sallie. Guess what! I got to go to the Historical Museum. The best part about it was I got to go with Mrs. Abernethy's Creative Cougars!!!! I learned that the first Greenville causality in World War II was, James O. Jordan and the first one in Korea was Jack Loutzenhisor and in Vietnam was Paul W. Bush. I had so much fun!! My favorite room was the Military Room. That's were I learned that. Lexi's favorite room was the Military room too. After we left we went to have lunch and Lexi shared her's with me because we were talking and becoming friends because we both liked the same room at the Historical Museum. I really like this class because they talk about me and say nice things. They also get me in a lot of pictures with them I love it because they make me feel like a celebrity!! I feel so popular!! Also the Creative Cougar is my friend. In the pictures we are usually beside each other. Well got to go because we are going to the Canal Museum right now. I hope you liked my blog!!
Sincerely, Civil War Sallie : )
By: Lexi

From CivilWarSallie

Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-29642674668241270582011-05-19T18:09:00.000-07:002011-05-19T18:12:42.529-07:00Riverview HotelHi my name is Civil War Sallie and I got to go to The Historical Museum with Mrs. Abernethy's Creative Cougars. The thing that I liked the best is the Riverview Hotel. The reason I like the Riverview Hotel is because the shoes in the closet were way different than our kind of shoes! The second thing that I like is the Military room because it has a lot of cool stuff like the Purple Heart. I personally thought that was really cool! If you ever come to Greenville I recommend you go to the Historical museum. I wish we could have stayed there all day!!! But of course we went and ate lunch. After lunch we played games in the rec center. Then we went to the Canal Museum.
By:Rachael

From CivilWarSallie

Civil War Salliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08853406046234759016noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2766632978036664840.post-63145903955355776892011-05-19T17:57:00.000-07:002011-05-19T18:15:18.274-07:00Coal is Cool!Hi! I'm Civil War Sallie, and I am here to tell you all about the coal on the boat we saw. I was with the Creative Cougars who are very famous. We went to the Canal Museum that is in their town, Greenville, PA. We learned all about the two different kinds of coal. One is all coal with nothing added, but the other is coal with sulfur in it. The type of coal with nothing added in it is heavier than the type with sulfur in it. It was fun to touch, but it got my fur all black. That reminds me that I still have to get that off!! I'm Civil War Sallie. I'm staying with the Creative Cougars. I went on a field trip with them. I want to tell you about a painting that was on the wall. It was a painting of a picture that was greenville in 1868. There was a big fire that burnt down every building on Main Street except for the brick buildings. I think that I recognize some of the buildings! I thought that learning about Greenville's history was very interesting. I loved spending the day with the Creative Cougars. I really liked the parlor room in the museum. I think it was really amazing! It had a lot of old antiques. The one thing I really liked was the ostrich egg. I thought that was really interesting because it was so huge. I really liked other things in that room also. Like my second thing that I liked was the children's piano. IT even made noise.
